Functions:
1. Tells about daily activities

Examples:
I speak English everyday
She cooks fried rice every morning
Mother washes clothes every Sunday

2. Tells about general truth
Examples:
The ice is cold
The sun sets in the West
The fire is hot

3. It can also be used to tell about future activity
Examples:
The office opens at 8 o’clock tomorrow
The meeting starts at 7 o’clock tonight
I call you later

General formulation of Simple Present Tense:
A.Verbal Sentence ( sentence that uses verb )
I POSITIVE SENTENCE

1.For Subject: THEy/WE/I/You + Verb1 + Complement + etc.
Examples:
They play football every afternoon
We study English every Wednesday and Saturday
I get up at 6 o clock every morning
You come here everyday

2.For Subject: HE/SHE/IT + Verb1 (-s/-es/ies) + etc.

Remember!
1.Add –es if the verb ends in o, s, x, sh, ch letters
Example:

Kiss Kisses

2.Add –s if the verb does not end in o, s, x, sh, ch letters
Examples:
Help Helps

3.Change y letter into i-es, if the verb ends in “y” and if there is consonant before y letter
Example:
Fly Flies
Cry Cries
Carry Carries

4.Just add “s” if there is vowel before y letter
Example:

Buy Buys
Obey Obeys

II NEGATIVE SENTENCE
1.For subject: THEY/WE/I/YOU + don’t + Verb1 + etc.
Examples:
They don’t study English everyday
I don’t smoke

2.For subject: HE/SHE/IT + doesn’t + Verb1 + etc.
Examples:
He doesn’t speak English well
She doesn’t watch television every night
Mother doesn’t wash clothes every Sunday

III INTERROGATIVE SENTENCE
1. For subjects they, we, I and you:

Do THEY/WE/I/YOU + Verb1 + etc. + ?
Examples:
Do you speak English?
Do they like Indonesian food?

Answer:
Yes, ______ do.
No, _______ don’t.

2. For subject he, she and it
Does HE/SHE/IT + Verb1 + etc. + ?
Examples:
Does he come here everyday?
Does she watch television every night?
Does your father read newspaper every morning?

Exercise:
Translate the following sentences into English!
1.Apakah anda belajar bahasa Inggris setiap hari?
2.Apakah ibu anda memasak setiap pagi?
3.Apakah mereka suka pisang?

INFORMATIVE QUESTION
Informative question is a question that needs information.
(What-apa, Why-mengapa, When-kapan, Who-siapa, Which-yang mana, Where-dimana/kemana and how-bagaimana) can be put in front of the auxiliary ( do / does ) to make informative question.

Examples:
1. What do you do?
2. What time does your sister go to school?
3. Why does your father like reading newspaper?
4. Why do you learn English?
5. When do you go to Jakarta?
6. When does your mother arrive?
7. Who does your mother live here with?
8. Who do you practise your English with?
9. Which book do you like?
10.Which one does your girlfriend prefer?
11.How do you come here?
12.How does your sister go to work?

2.For subject: HE/SHE/IT + is + ADJECTIVE/NOUN/ADVERB OF PLACE/ ADVERB OF TIME
Examples:
He is handsome
She is a doctor
My father is in Australia
It is 7 o’ clock

3.For subject: THEY/WE/YOU + are + ADJECTIVE/NOUN/ADVERB OF PLACE/ ADVERB OF TIME
Examples:
They are hungry
We are students
You are teacher
We are in Bali

2.For subject: HE/SHE/IT + is not + ADJECTIVE/NOUN/ADVERB OF PLACE/ ADVERB OF TIME
Examples:
She is not a teacher
Juliet is not present today
Howard is not here anymore

3.For subject: THEY/WE/YOU + are not + ADJECTIVE/NOUN/ADVERB OF PLACE/ ADVERB OF TIME
Examples:
They are not stupid
We are not hungry
You are not my teacher

2.For subject he, she and it: Is + HE/SHE/IT + ADJECTIVE/NOUN/ADVERB OF PLACE/ ADVERB OF TIME
Examples:
Is she at home?
Is it 7 o clock?

3.For subject they, we, and you: THEY/WE/YOU + are not + ADJECTIVE/NOUN/ADVERB OF PLACE/ ADVERB OF TIME
Examples:
Are you hungry?
Are they at home?
Are we correct?
